Use these tips to easily get around Sydney, one of the most accessible cities in the world.

Getting to Sydney

5WCWS does not have an official airline.

Sydney (Kingsford Smith) International Airport (SYD) is one of the busiest airports in Australia and one of the world’s oldest continuously operated commercial airports in Australia. With more than 35 airlines flying into Sydney Airport, it handles flights from a wide range of destinations globally. Many major airlines operate direct flights to Sydney, some of the prominent ones include Qantas, Emirates, Singapore Airlines, Cathay Pacific, British Airways, Air New Zealand, United Airlines, and many others. These airlines operate flights from their respective hubs and other key cities directly to Sydney.

Sydney Airport handles hundreds of flights daily, from numerous cities around the world. Major international hubs such as Singapore, Dubai, Los Angeles, Hong Kong and various cities in Europe are common departure points for flights to Sydney.

Getting around Sydney

Sydney has an extensive public transport system of buses, trains, metro rail, light rail and ferries. To use the network, you’ll need to either purchase an Opal card or use a contactless credit card, debit card or mobile device.

  • Use an Opal card or your preferred payment method on public transport services in Sydney, the Blue Mountains, Central Coast, Hunter Valley, Illawarra and the Southern Highlands.
  • Purchase an Opal card and load it with funds at participating retailers such as newsagents, convenience stores and supermarkets, and at Sydney Airport. There are also top-up machines at some train stations, light rail stops and ferry wharves.
  • Tap your Opal card on the reader when you board your selected mode of transport and be sure to tap the reader again when you disembark.
  • The Sydney Trains Network covers Sydney metropolitan area train services bounded by Berowra to the north, Bondi Junction to the east, Waterfall to the south, Macarthur and Leppington to the south west, Emu Plains and Richmond to the west.
